I am a dad to an 8.5-month old boy and a former LEGO maniac. LEGO age ratings are historically meaningless and all the pieces on this set (even flowers) are large and cannot be swallowed. (Real manics treat minimum age rating as the age upon they should move up to the

As anyone familiar with LEGO and DUPLO would know, each piece is very high quality, practically unbreakable and very easy to clean.

The set comes in a large sturdy box, about twice as large it needs to be. Although that may not be so environmentally friendly, it doubles as a storage box for few other toys (particularly other DUPLO sets that comes in a paper box). My boy is currently more fascinated with the box than its contents.

I've looked at other starter DUPLO sets and frankly, none seemed all that interesting to me (yes, I realize I am not the target audience). There are total of 4 sets, this 5416 Brick Box (house, bird, tree, two flowers, etc.), Lego Duplo 5538 Creative Bucket Started Set Bricks, LEGO DUPLO Deluxe Brick Bucket (5417), and discontinued Lego Duplo Blocks 5486 Building Set.

Although 5538 and 5417 are more interesting than 5416, they cost about twice and three times as much, respectively. Between 1 to 1.5 years of age, most toddler boys become fascinated with cars and I intend to introduce more realistic sets then. Until then, 5416 will be as interesting as other sets and at much lower price.

My boy hasn't yet figured out how to put pieces together, but he loves to take pieces apart, banging them together, and of course, sucking them. Red bird is his favorite, although leg piece comes off a bit too easily. I suppose that is good in a way as it encourages him to take other pieces apart. With remaining bricks. I built him a doggy and an airplane for to bang and take apart.
